Ground breaks on a new community centre in Vancouver’s Marpole neighbourhood

Construction on a new community centre in Vancouver’s Marpole neighbourhood broke ground on Wednesday.

An event was held at Oak Park to launch construction and commemorate the occasion.

In a post on X, the Vancouver Park Board says construction on the 42,000-square-foot facility will start later this fall.

The new Marpole Community Centre is expected to house a gymnasium, basketball courts, and a childcare centre that can accommodate up to 74 children.

City of Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim says the centre will help ensure important services are delivered for “decades to come.”

“It also supports one of Vancouver’s key priorities to create a healthy, inclusive, and equitable city that places the physical and mental health of Vancouverites front and centre,” he said.

Park Board Chair Scott Jensen says the facility that the new centre will replace was important to the community, but it can “no longer support the needs of its growing local population.”

“Today’s event marks an important milestone for this long-awaited new facility for Marpole and the wider Vancouver community. I can’t wait to welcome the first visitors through its doors,” he said.

The renewal project for the Marpole Community Centre is projected to cost a total of $91.3 million.

The facility is expected to be complete and open in 2025, and the City of Vancouver says an outdoor pool is in the works as part of a future phase of the project.
