Blanket drive to flank Canada Line stations this week

You may notice groups of volunteers at Canada Line stations collecting blankets and other warm items this Friday and Saturday.

It’s BlanketBC’s annual “Drive on the Line” campaign in Metro Vancouver.

The drive is hoping for donations of socks, scarves, mittens, toques, and blankets for the upcoming winter season.

Volunteers will be stationed at nine locations, including Waterfront, Yaletown/Roundhouse, Vancouver City, Broadway/City Hall, Oakridge/41st, Marine Drive, Bridgeport, Lansdowne, and Richmond Brighouse.

“This is not just about collecting items; it’s about saving lives. Every contribution goes a long way,” the organization explained.

BlanketBC says everything they collect will be distributed to more than 150 South Coast shelter programs and organizations.

“The urgency of this campaign cannot be overstated. Shelters are on the brink, desperately trying to stock up before it’s too late. Our region is bracing for one of the harshest and coldest winters in decades. The need is overwhelming, and we implore our community to stand with us as we tackle this winter’s chilling challenge head-on,” it said.

Over the past 18 years, the group says it has distributed nearly 700,000 blankets to help people survive cold nights.
