An art gallery in Gastown is out more than $20,000 after it says a life-sized bronze horse-head sculpture was stolen and a door was smashed.
The Gallery George on West Hastings Director Theresa Mura says she was called at around 8 p.m. on Tuesday by security and told the gallery’s front door was shattered.
She tells CityNews she thinks the heist was “definitely planned,” as she believes it would have been impossible to lift the statue on a whim.
“To get it into the gallery, we had to get a hydraulic dolly and wheel it into the gallery and then lift it up to pedestal height,” she said.
“Nobody can do it by themselves, had to be planned. The sculpture was in the front window and my guess is that somebody has taken it for the material — the bronze.”
The Vancouver Police Department says it is investigating the theft but no one has been arrested so far.
The art gallery has set up a GoFundMe to cover the cost of repairs and the stolen statue.
