Camper lucky to be alive after ‘suspicious’ North Vancouver vehicle fire

A man is lucky to be alive after someone tried to set fire to the truck camper he was sleeping in in North Vancouver Monday night.

Mounties say the District of North Vancouver Fire Rescue Services got police involved after the ‘suspicious fire’ broke out just after 9:30 p.m.

A witness had noticed a fire under the truck, parked at West 1st Street and MacKay Road.

The man who was sleeping inside the camper at the time was woken up by firefighters and was able to escape.

“During the course of the investigation, it was revealed that the original caller was informed by two men that they observed an unidentified man on a bicycle throw an object under the camper truck before the fire was observed. The two men have yet to be identified and investigators are looking to speak to these two witnesses in an effort to further our investigation,” Mounties said in a statement Wednesday.

Speaking to CityNews, Const. Mansoor Sahak says the truck sustained damage to its left side, “just near the gas tank.”

“The occupant of the vehicle is extremely lucky that this camper did not go up in flames and exploded,” he said.

“We’re just extremely grateful that no one got hurt, because obviously this could have been a deadly incident.”

Police are urging anyone with information about the fire or who may have witnessed it and not yet spoken to police to contact the North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311 and quote file 23-24844.
