Sex offender who sparked 10-day manhunt remanded in custody

A convicted sex offender who took off from his halfway house earlier this month, sparking a 10-day manhunt, remains in custody Friday after his court appearance was rescheduled.

Randall Hopley is facing charges of breaching his bail conditions as well as charges linked to his disappearance.

His next court appearance is now scheduled for Dec. 8.

Hopley failed to return to his halfway house in Vancouver on Nov. 4, initiating a Canada-wide warrant. More than a dozen full-time investigators had been searching for the man.

After disappearing, police said he had cut off his electronic monitoring device as he was worried about an upcoming court appearance and feared he would be returned to custody.

Police say Hopley was spotted by an off-duty officer outside the Vancouver Police Station on East Cordova Street and was arrested without incident on Nov. 14, with the 58-year-old saying he was cold.

The Vancouver Police Department has not shared what Hopley was doing or where he went while he was unaccounted for.

Hopley served a six-year prison sentence after abducting a child in Sparwood, B.C. in 2011, sparking an Amber Alert. He was released in 2018 on a 10-year long-term supervision order and moved to a halfway house in Vancouver.
