B.C. skier Broderick Thompson hurt in training ahead of World Cup in U.S.

A Canadian alpine skier from B.C. has sustained head injuries in a fall during training ahead of World Cup races in the U.S.

Alpine Canada says in a statement that Broderick Thompson fell during training before the upcoming races, to be held in Beaver Creek, CO.

“Broderick was airlifted to Denver Health Centre where he is receiving the best possible care. He is alert and his condition is stable, and he is showing steady improvement,” Alpine Canada said Friday.

The 29-year-old from Whistler has 78 World Cup starts and has taken part in two Olympics, Alpine Canada says.

Despite various injuries, Thompson has bounced back to return to international competition. Team Canada notes the skier crashed in the 2016-17 season, tearing his LCL and spraining both MCLs. He would go on to complete the necessary physical therapy and, in the 2017-18, posted what Team Canada said was “his then-career-best result in December when he finished eighth in the alpine combined in Bormio, Italy.”

In 2018, Thompson injured his knee in a pre-season crash. Following “incredible commitment to rehabilitation,” Alpine Canada says he returned in 2021 to claim his first World Cup podium, placing third in the super-G in Beaver Creek.

Thompson joined Alpine Canada in 2015.

He started skiing as soon as he could walk, the organizations say, with Team Canada noting he began competing at 11, “inspired by Terry Fox, who showed the grit and determination and patience that he aspires to.”
