Highway 1 is closed Monday night through the Fraser Canyon due to heavy rains and snow in the forecast.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says its geotechnical experts recommended the highway close between Boothroyd and Siska, just south of Lytton, as a precaution.
The ministry says it’s concerned the heavy precipitation could overwhelm the area affected by the Kookipi Creek wildfire this past summer.
The closure will last from 7 p.m. until the road can be assessed on Tuesday.
Motorists will be warned about the closures and advised of detours at checkpoints set up just outside of Hope and Lytton.
The ministry says Highways 3 or 5 can be used when heading between the Lower Mainland and the interior, but drivers should be weary of winter driving conditions on all routes.
Winter tires or chains are now required on most routes in B.C.
“Anyone travelling between the Lower Mainland and interior should ensure their vehicle is properly equipped for winter and be prepared for delays by carrying food, water and blankets,” the ministry states.
“Drivers can assist maintenance crews by moving over safely when they see a vehicle with an amber light approaching. This will allow maintenance crews to clear the snow and improve road conditions to reduce hazards, and help motorists get safely to their destinations.”
