The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) is trying to figure out what is behind what appears to be a diesel sheen that was visible around some parts of False Creek.
The agency says it received reports of the sheen around Science World Monday evening. It notes a team was sent out to conduct an on-site assessment Tuesday but wasn’t able to complete the work “due to heavy rain and lack of visibility.”
“We have been on the water again since first light this morning,” the CCG said Wednesday.
“Our Marine Environmental Hazard Response has located an area of marine pollution between Cambie Street Bridge to the east end of Granville Island. Crews are working to recover as much product as possible this afternoon and we have hired a contractor to support the ongoing clean-up.”
The source of the leak is still unclear. The CCG says it’s working with the province and City of Vancouver, with “potential land-based sources from sewer outflows in the area” also being investigated.
“The Greater Vancouver Integrated Response Plan has been activated and we are ready to provide a large-scale on-water response if required,” the agency explained.
“At this time we don’t believe this marine pollution is a safety concern to boaters and citizens living in the area, however out of an abundance of caution, we are asking boaters to avoid any patches of fuel slick and shorelines in the area.”
