This past summer saw some of the most intense and destructive wildfires in Canadian history. While well documented then, one West Kelowna-area wildfire is receiving some more worldwide attention.
A photo of the McDougall Creek wildfire by Canadian Press photographer Darryl Dick has made it into the prestigious Time’s Top 100 Photos of 2023.
The night-time shot shows the massive wildfire on the mountainside behind West Kelowna glowing above homes in the area.
Almost 200 homes were damaged in that wildfire alone, with approximately 100 homes being destroyed completely.
According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, the McDougall Creek wildfire, which burned from Aug. 15 through to Sept. 21, caused over $480 million in insured damages alone.
This year was the worst fire season on record in Canada, with more than two million hectares of land burned in B.C. alone, by approximately 2,200 wildfires.
