B.C. Squid Game contestant shares gameshow experience

A Metro Vancouver woman who was one of the many contestants on the Netflix game show “Squid Game: The Challenge,” based on a popular series, is sharing her experience after the first season of the program wrapped.

Darylle Johnson was player 273 in the game. She was eliminated during the life-size Battleship board game while she was a lieutenant.

“It probably looked silly to everybody who knows about strategy in Battleship, it’s like never pick C-3, because that’s psychologically the most commonly picked coordinate, and one of our biggest boats was on C-3,” she recalled.

But that wasn’t the hardest game she had to play, with Johnson telling CityNews Red Light, Green Light had her shivering.

“It was so cold, so long, and it’s the idea of sprinting for two to three seconds and then just holding it for 30 minutes,” Johnson said

“You’re having to have your fast twitch muscles on at any given time … within those 30 minutes, you can end up having to run. That was very, very tough.”

Johnson says that particular game took 21 hours to film, alone.

But the games themselves weren’t the only challenging experiences, Johnson says she wasn’t able to get as much sleep as she hoped for during filming.

“I had ‘Dr. Rick,’ I think he was player 232, he was in the bunk … down from me and he was the biggest snore on the show. I probably got a good two hours [of sleep] a night, and honestly after a few nights of two or three hours of sleep, you start to lose it a little bit.”

She spent nearly six months interviewing with the show’s producers before finally being chosen to appear on the gameshow, and while it was a challenging experience overall, Johnson says she would definitely do it again.
