North Van RCMP arrests 1 person after reported assault

Police in North Vancouver say one person has been arrested and another is seriously hurt after an incident Tuesday morning.

According to Mounties, officers were called to the area of Lytton Street near Bendale Road, just north of the Mt Seymour Parkway, around 5 a.m. after “a report of an assault inside a residence.”

The people inside the home “were safely removed,” police explained, adding officers then began searching for a suspect.

“Due to the mental state of the suspect and potential for violence, our Integrated Emergency Response Team and Crisis Negotiators were called out to assist with this investigation,” Const. Mansoor Sahak said just after 10 a.m.

He says the suspect was arrested shortly after 9 a.m.

“The victim sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries and they were transported to hospital,” Sahak said. “The suspect is a resident of the same residence.”

The RCMP says its “operation has concluded safely” and that there are “no outstanding suspects.”

People were being asked to stay away from the area as the situation unfolded, and were also urged to “not share pictures of police operations on social media.”

As a result of the police incident, the North Vancouver School District said, at the direction of police, that there would be delayed starts for three schools in the area — Blueridge Elementary, Seymour Heights Elementary, and Windsor Secondary — until 10:30 a.m.

“The RCMP have confirmed there is no immediate threat, but they do ask people to stay clear of the area (between Carnation and Mount Seymour Parkway at Lytton),” the district said on its website Tuesday morning, before word of the arrest.

Some people living in the area say they first started hearing police sirens in the area before being told by police to “shelter in place.”

“We could see I guess what looked like a SWAT team with guns and stuff having a look around and asking us to stay inside with the blinds closed,” one person living in the neighbourhood told CityNews

I think the police used some sort of flash-bang type of device, that was probably around an hour ago,” he added just after 9:30 a.m.

“We did hear announcements over loud speaker to please give up, but we didn’t see anybody.”
