Surrey crash leaves 1 person dead

A fatal collision between an SUV and a dump truck in Surrey killed one person Thursday morning, just days after a pedestrian was critically hit by a pick-up truck in Aldergrove. Kier Junos reports.

A crash in Surrey Thursday morning has left one person dead, the RCMP says.

Officers received reports of the crash involving a dump truck and an SUV in the area of 80 Avenue and 122A Street around 6:30 a.m. One person died at the scene, despite efforts to try to save them.

The cause of the crash is still unclear but the RCMP says its Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service has been called in to try to determine the circumstances around what happened.

RCMP Constable Parmvir Singh Kahlon says the dump truck driver stayed on scene, as the criminal collision investigation team did its work.

“The collision did occur in the early hours of the morning, when it was dark, it was also raining heavily this morning – so those could be contributing factors,” said Kahlon.

The SUV – a grey Infiniti FX35 – appeared totalled, and its crushed front faced the wrong way on the street.

Neighbours walking by the disaster wondered how it got there, since a median separates east and westbound traffic on 80th avenue.

“There could be a variety of factors that come into play when a collision occurs – that could be possibly one of them,” said Kahlon.

Police closed 80 Avenue to westbound traffic from 124 Street to 120A Street for hours.

ICBC warns drivers of holiday driving dangers

The deadly crash happened on the darkest day of the year, and ICBC says it’s urging drivers to be careful over the holidays when collisions tend to peak.

In Aldergrove around 4:20 p.m. on Monday there was another crash, as a Dodge pick up truck hit an 80-year-old woman, according to Langley RCMP. She went to hospital with life-threatening injuries after the truck driver administered first aid.

Police initially said she was unable to identify herself, but on Thursday afternoon, Cpl. Craig Van Herk said someone from her neighbourhood recognized her and she’s now with her family.

ICBC says over Christmas and New Year’s, 457 people are injured and two people killed every year in 1,772 car crashes.

The RCMP is asking anyone with information or dash cam footage from the area of 80 Avenue and 122A Street to contact investigators at 604-599-0502 and quote file 2023-207460.
