Trailer fire in Burnaby spreads black smoke over Highway One

A trailer with propane tanks inside exploded in Burnaby Sunday afternoon, causing big plumes of black smoke to descend over Highway One.

Assistant Chief Derek Masaro with Burnaby Fire says crews responded to the fire at about 2:30 p.m. at 3700 Esmond Ave.

He says the fire was in an encampment near the intersection of Boundary Road and Grandview Highway.

By 3:17 p.m., Masaro says the fire was cleared and no injuries were reported.

A number of personal effects were damaged in the blaze, he adds.

“The trailer was demolished and some debris had spread from the fire, so it’s probably not the safest place to be right now,” Masaro said.

Masaro says he believes city crews were on scene to assess the damage.

“I know there were multiple people staying in that encampment, and they’re probably going to ask them to leave,” he said.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
