North Shore, Sea to Sky backcountry ‘very dangerous’: Avalanche Canada

The recent snow coupled with strong winds has led to a rise in the avalanche risk on the North Shore and in Sea to Sky country, according to Avalanche Canada.

The avalanche agency explains conditions in the Metro Vancouver backcountry are “very dangerous” at higher elevations.

It goes on to say that more than 30 centimetres of storm snow has fallen, and Tuesday’s extreme winds are building “reactive storm slabs.”

According to Avalanche Canada, one skier reported an avalanche on Mt Strachan, describing the reactive storm slab as being 20 cm in thickness.

Avalanche Canada has also upgraded the backcountry from Golden Ears and east to “high,” describing very dangerous conditions.
