Thousands without power as B.C. snowstorm downs trees, power lines

The snowstorm blanketing southern B.C. Wednesday caused major outages for parts of Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island.

BC Hydro says about 25,000 customers were affected by the outages just before 12 p.m., though that number came down as the day progressed.

Spokesperson Susie Rieder says crews have been ready and preparing for the possibility that heavy snow could cause trees and branches to fall onto wires.

She urges customers to be ready, too.

“[Have things] like almost 72 hours of supplies in case the lights go out,” Rieder explained. “Long-term outages are very rare but it’s always good to be prepared for the worst. So things like water, batteries, external phone charger, non-perishable items.”

Rieder says BC Hydro expects there could be more outages on the way for Wednesday afternoon, as the snow begins to taper off.

“Snow does add weight to trees and branches, as well as our lines. Snow can add so much weight to branches and trees that it can result in them breaking and coming into contact with electrical equipment. So that is one challenge that could cause outages,” she said.
