Surrey crane collapse prompts WorkSafe probe

Another incident involving a crane has been reported in Metro Vancouver, this time in Surrey.

Dennis Brode, director of health and safety at Axiom Builders, says during a safety check at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, “We experienced a crane failure.”

Brode notes no injuries have been reported, and WorkSafeBC is on-site investigating.

“Our team will work with them to ensure a comprehensive assessment. The safety of our workers and the surrounding community is our priority, and we are committed to providing updates as we gather more information,” Brode told CityNews.

WorkSafeBC confirms to CityNews it was notified about an incident Tuesday morning in the area of 105 Avenue and King George Boulevard.

The agency says it has issued a stop-use order on the crane, as well as a stop-work order in the area around the equipment.

Photos shared with CityNews show a piece of the crane toppled over, with other images appearing to show debris below the crane. No details about what exactly caused the “failure” are available.

This comes days after another incident involving a crane in Burnaby. That case forced police to shut down a busy stretch of Lougheed Highway for several hours on Friday, with stop-use orders issued for the crane and derrick, according to WorkSafe.
