One person has died and multiple people are injured — two critically — after a two-vehicle crash along Highway 1 in Burnaby early Sunday morning.

In an email to CityNews, the Burnaby RCMP says the crash happened shortly before 4 a.m. near the Sprott Street exit.

Police say the collision happened on the side of the road near the Sprott Street off ramp.

“It was reported that a vehicle, with four passengers, was travelling eastbound and had pulled over and stopped on the side of the highway near the Sprott Street off ramp,” Mounties said. “An SUV, also travelling eastbound, then struck the vehicle.”

When officers got to the scene, they found one person dead. Three others were taken two hospital, and two of them are in critical condition.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor. The driver of the other vehicle was released from the scene with minor injuries.

The stretch experienced major delays into Sunday afternoon, with backup stretching past the Willingdon Avenue exit. As of 1:30 p.m., this backup had cleared.
