1 dead after Burnaby condo fire near Metrotown

One man is dead after a fire in Burnaby. As Kier Junos reports, the building had stood empty for more than a year.

Burnaby firefighters say one man is dead after a “heavy fire” at a vacant condo building near Metrotown Tuesday night.

Burnaby Fire public information officer Paul Rushton says crews were called to the area of Maywood Street and Silver Avenue just after 9 p.m.

Upon arrival, Rushton says crews used ground ladders to climb up to a woman who was on a balcony on the third flood. Crews then “conducted an aggressive search under heavy fire conditions” to locate a male occupant they were told was still inside.

“Because of the state of the interior of the structure, it was very hazardous to our firefighters performing search and rescue,” Rushton said.

The male occupant was eventually found and removed from the building, but he later succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.

Rushton says the cause of the fire is still under investigation. This is the first call to this building that he’s aware of, since it became vacant in January.
