Car driven into water for ‘bizarre’ livestream in Port Moody, police arrest driver

Port Moody Police are looking at recommending possible mischief and dangerous vehicle operation charges for a 19-year-old who drove his car into the Burrard Inlet on Monday night. Kier Junos reports.

A “bizarre” incident in Port Moody Monday night landed a 19-year-old man in handcuffs after he live-streamed driving his car into the water at Rocky Point Park, the Port Moody Police Department says.

Const. Sam Zacharias tells CityNews that just before 10 p.m., police officers responded to reports of the livestream taking place.

“It’s alleged that the man in the video was paid to drive his vehicle into the Burrard Inlet by this live stream based out of the United States,” Zacharias said.

When police arrived, the car was “fully submerged in the water,” he added.

“The driver was located at the scene and detained and questioned. He was released from the scene, but I can tell you that criminal charges … are being examined right now to determine if this will meet the threshold for a criminal charge.”

Zacharias adds the boat launch at the park is currently closed as crews work to retrieve the vehicle from the Inlet. “Tow operators were unsuccessful with getting it out last night, they’re going to take another crack at it this morning.”

Zacharias says the online dare is “very bizarre. … There’s so many implications with this. Someone could’ve been hurt. No one was, but with that said, there’s gonna be environmental impacts to the water because of this person’s vehicle.”

“I personally doubt that the matter will be covered for insurance purposes,” he added.

Those who frequent this park say they’re not happy with the stunt.

“As far as somebody driving a car in here – it’s crazy. You can’t possibly think of driving a car in here without causing some environmental damage,” one park user said.

Zacharias says there was some “kind of value” promised to the driver for driving his vehicle into the water. “My understanding is that this live streamer offers to pay different people across the world to do different things.”

Reaching out to CityNews, someone claiming to be streamer Adin Ross says he paid the 19-year-old $30,000 USD to drive the car into the inlet.

“He said he would get the vehicle towed out and everything would be alright,” the person said.

However, CityNews has been unable to verify this person is Ross.
