IIO confirms passenger in Langley RCMP-involved crash died from injuries

B.C.’s police oversight agency confirmed Thursday that a passenger injured while police were trying to pull over the car he was in has died from his injuries.

The incident happened on Monday, just after midnight, when Langley RCMP officers tried to stop a black Mazda on 16 Avenue.

The driver reportedly didn’t comply and crashed in the area of 16 Avenue and 264 Street.

Two people — both from the Mazda — were taken to the hospital. The driver sustained minor injuries while the passenger was seriously hurt.

In an update Thursday, the Independent Investigations Office of BC shared that the passenger succumbed to their injuries and died on Tuesday evening.

The driver of the other vehicle — the sole occupant — was not physically hurt, police say.

“The IIO investigations continues to determine what role, if any, police actions or inaction may have played in the death,” the IIO said.

The agency is asking anyone who saw the crash or who has any relevant information to contact the IIO at 1-855-446-8477 or iiobc.ca.
