As people explore their local mountains this long weekend, North Shore Rescue is out with their final snowpack summary of the season.
With snowstorms and a number of rescues, avalanche safety officer André-Jean Maheu says it’s been a rollercoaster of a year.
“All things considered, we’re actually coming out of the season reasonably unscathed,” Maheu said.
“But the season is not over, even though this is the last video. We did receive about 25 centimetres of snow in the last three days.”
And with the weekend’s warm temperatures, Maheu says there’s a chance of loose, wet avalanches this weekend.
“We are expecting actually pretty nice weather,” he said. “It’s supposed to be sunny and quite warm and the big concern will be wet, loose [snow] in the top 25 to 45 cm.”
Metro Vancouver’s mountains currently sit at “moderate” danger ratings, with Avalanche Canada advising people to watch out for changing conditions.
