Man arrested, arson investigators called in after ‘suspicious’ fire in Surrey: RCMP

One man has been taken into custody and arson investigators have been called in after a fire in a Surrey townhouse complex Friday afternoon, the RCMP says.

Police and fire crews were called out to the blaze at the Newton-area home at 127th Street and 64th Avenue around 12:30 p.m.

A 22-year-old man was taken into custody in connection with the incident, which police are calling “suspicious in nature.”

“Surrey RCMP General Investigation Unit has conduct of the investigation and will be working with the Surrey Fire Investigator and Surrey RCMP Arson Investigation Unit to determine the circumstances of the fire,” Mounties say.

Multiple units in the complex had to be evacuated, and a total of three units were affected by the fire.

Police say there were no injuries.

The Surrey RCMP is asking anyone who may have witnessed anything or who may have CCTV or dashcam footage in the area around the time of the incident to call them at 605-599-0502 and quote file number 2024-58390.
