Two people dead after plane crash near Squamish Friday, confirms RCMP

The RCMP has confirmed that two people are dead after a plane crash near Squamish Friday.
“On May 25, 2024, police were able to access the remote area located South of Squamish on the West side of Howe Sound via air. Once on scene it was confirmed that sadly, the two occupants of the plane did not survive,” said Sgt. Vanessa Munn Sunday.
Mounties had said Saturday they received an automatic crash notification from a smartphone after a crash happened on Friday evening.
According to the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), the location was approximately 20 nautical miles north of Vancouver. It says it was called just before 6:30 p.m. to search Mount Ellesmere and surrounding areas for the aircraft.
The RCMP says it is working with the Transportation Safety Board and the BC Coroners Service to investigate the incident. It says Squamish Search and Rescue, Blackcombe Helicopters, and several members of the public assisted in locating the plane.
Police say no further details will be released at this time.
