Stray spark causes small wildfire at Okanagan orchard

A freak-incident involving workers doing some cutting at an Okanagan orchard could have turned tragic for nearby homeowners.

A spark led to a fire that quickly spread up a hill, moving rapidly toward some houses, according to Okanagan Falls fire chief Fred Dobransky.

“[The flames] almost came up to a street called Peach Cliff Drive, and there were homes up there, and it came pretty close to the homes we were actually defending, three properties up on top … coming right into their backyards,” he said.

For now, Dobransky says there’s a good guard around the blaze and a majority of the fire has been put out, aside from some hot spots.

He adds that nobody was hurt from the fire.
