Cranbrook elementary school damaged after early morning fire

By Anthony Atanasov

An early morning fire destroyed parts of Amy Woodland Elementary School in Cranbrook.

Fire crews were called to the scene just after 4 a.m., Deputy Fire Chief Dan McKinnon tells CityNews.

“We had heavy smoke coming out of the gymnasium area with some fire on the south side of the gymnasium roof structure of the school,” McKinnon said.

“Heavy fire damage to the gymnasium area and quite a bit of smoke damage throughout the rest of the classroom areas and hallways.”

Mckinnon says they are now working with school officials to clean up the scene and to try to limit damage as much as possible.

Nobody was around the building at the time, and no injuries have been reported, he says.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
