Richmond arson suspect lit own pants on fire before running away: RCMP

The Richmond RCMP has released the pictures of two men wanted in connection with an attempted arson on April 24.

Mounties allege the men not only smashed a window at a business on Simpson Road near River Road, but they also lit an object on fire and then likely wanted to throw it inside the building.

Instead, surveillance footage shows one of the suspects ended up lighting their own pants on fire.

Police say both men took off before anything else happened.

Police are now asking the public for help to identify the suspects. One man is described by police as being between 40 and 50 years old, with slicked back, “dirty blonde hair.” At the time of the incident, he was wearing a dark long-sleeved shirt and “charred” beige or tan-coloured pants.

“Based on the nature of the fire there’s a high probability that this suspect sustained injuries to his lower body,” said Corp. Adriana O’Malley.

The second man is described as being in his late 20s to late 30s. Police say he was wearing a dark-coloured balaclava, black jogger-style pants with blue stripes down the side, dark-coloured glasses, a dark hoody, and Nike Jordan high-top shoes at the time of the fire.

Richmond RCMP is asking anyone who has information about the incident or can identify the suspects to contact Richmond RCMP and quote file number 2024-12713.
