B.C. August long weekend forecast has plenty of sun, heat

The heat has settled over southern B.C. just in time for the long weekend.
After almost two weeks of seasonal weather, the mercury for much of the region is soaring.
1130 NewsRadio Meteorologist Michael Kuss explains that the period of hot weather, which began on Thursday, could last seven-plus days. The Lower Mainland will see temperatures in the mid-20s to 30-degree range, with no precipitation in sight.
If you’re heading out of town for the August long weekend, it’ll be warm everywhere you go, but also a bit unsettled depending on where you land.
“The heat has returned to the B.C. Interior,” Kuss explained. “Temperatures soared yesterday to 36, 37 degrees.”
“There was a new record in Vernon of almost 37 degrees, breaking the old mark from 1907. It’s going to be another hot one today and all the way through the long weekend.
“Heat warnings are in place, and they will likely last through Sunday, if not Monday, with highs in the mid-30s for not only the Okanagan but up to the Thompson region and around Kamloops as well,” Kuss said.
If you’re heading into Sea-to-Sky country, Kuss says you might need to bring a rain jacket just in case, as the steamy weather is also bringing a risk of showers and even thunderstorms.
“It’s not out of the question,” Kuss said. “Otherwise, it’s partly sunny today, Saturday, and again on Monday.”
“Sunday is a sunny day. Temperatures, they’re going to be up there, especially this afternoon — the hottest of the bunch with heat warnings in place, into the mid-30s. It cools a touch on Sunday, the freshest day in the run in Whistler, up to 28 degrees under a sunny sky,” Kuss added.
And if you’re heading to southern Vancouver Island, you might get a little break from the extreme heat.
“The lower Island will experience less sunshine all the way through the wong weekend and beyond into next week, with temperatures between 20, 21 degrees, and 25 or 26, that’s it.
“It will be much hotter farther north on the Island, the east side of Vancouver Island, places like Nanaimo, Comox Valley, up to Campbell River, will have highs pushing 30 degrees, and there is a heat warning in place for those communities,” Kuss explained.
