Vancouver crews battle 3rd fire at Mount Pleasant vacant apartment building

Fire crews were on scene in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood fighting a large blaze that broke out in a residential building Tuesday.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services told 1130 NewsRadio this is the third time that flames have broken out in the low-rise apartment building on East 10th near Guelph Street in the last year.

“It’s been on fire twice before. We’ve got water on the fire now,” Assistant Fire Chief Keith Stewart said Tuesday evening.

“We’ve still got an active fire, though, in several units — and the third, and what appears to be the second floor. We’ve got buildings on both sides, on the east and the west; we’re protecting those buildings right now.”

Callers to the newsroom and multiple social media posts shared there was black smoke visible in the area, and a section of Broadway was closed with traffic being rerouted to Fraser Street.

Stewart said there were no injuries and no one was discovered inside.

“Nobody’s supposed to be in there, but we had reports that people were living out of there, but those are all unconfirmed reports. We’re going to get this fire under control, and then we’ll send people inside to search,” said Stewart.

In July 2023, more than 70 people were displaced when a major fire broke out at the building.

Weeks later, CityNews learned that the building owners had been accused of violating multiple fire codes.

As of Tuesday evening, Stewart said it was too early to determine if the cause of the fire was suspicious.
