Fatalities, multiple injuries reported in HWY 1 crash in Chilliwack

Aug. 7, 2024 update: Mother, child die in Highway 1 crash in Chilliwack

BC Highway Patrol says a multi-vehicle crash in Chilliwack on Tuesday resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.

All eastbound lanes on Highway 1 near No. 3 Road were closed at approximately 2:45 p.m. when BCHP first responders reached the scene.

“Police can confirm that there are fatalities and multiple people injured,” said Corp. Melissa Jongema.

She told 1130 NewsRadio that at least two people died.

In a statement late Tuesday, BC Emergency Health Services says five ambulances with primary care paramedics, two ambulances with advanced care paramedics, one advanced care paramedic responder unit, and one paramedic supervisor responded to the crash.

“Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to five patients. Four patients were transported to hospital in stable condition. One patient was transported in critical condition by ground ambulance to the helipad at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and then transported onto further care via air ambulance under the care of Critical Care Paramedics,” BCEHS continued.

The highway reopened to traffic approximately 12 hours after the crash, at around 2:45 a.m. on Wednesday.

In a post to social media Tuesday evening, Corp. Dave Noon of the Lower Mainland Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service previously said that investigators expect the eastbound lanes to remain closed for “several hours” while crews investigated the crash.
