Smoky skies bulletin issued for several areas across B.C.

The provincial government has issued a smoky skies bulletin for large parts of B.C.

Kamloops, Smithers, and Terrace are included in the bulletin, which means those municipalities are experiencing poor air quality due to wildfire smoke in the area.

“Smoke may be visible in many regions of the province, with general improvements (except central Coast) expected over the next 24-48 hours,” the bulletin says.

Neither Metro Vancouver nor Fraser Valley are covered by the bulletin.

A smoky skies bulletin is a public advisory to communicate “the rapidly changing nature of wildfire smoke,” according to the province.

“It is issued when areas of the province are being impacted or have reasonable potential to be impacted by wildfire smoke within 24 to 48 hours,” it said.

“These bulletins are based on available pollutant concentrations information, satellite information, smoke forecast models, and visual observations, and are not intended to manage local emission sources.”

People with pre-existing health conditions and respiratory conditions are more likely to experience health effects from smoke exposure. Anyone with difficulty breathing is advised to stop or reduce activity, stay cool, and drink plenty of fluids.

“People respond differently to smoke. Mild irritation and discomfort are common, and usually disappear when the smoke clears,” the bulletin said.

“If you are unsure whether you need medical care, call HealthLink BC at 811.”

The province says the bulletin will be updated Saturday.
