Mounties pay tribute to Constable Rick O’Brien ahead of anniversary

This weekend will mark one year since a Ridge Meadows RCMP constable was killed in the line of duty.

Police gathered at the Ridge Meadow’s RCMP detachment Friday to remember Constable Rick O’Brien.

O’Brien was killed while executing a search warrant in Coquitlam on Sept. 22, 2023.

The 51-year-old constable worked with the Ridge Meadow’s RCMP for seven years before his death.

Thousands turned out to O’Brien’s funeral in Langley, where people read messages of love and placed white roses on top of his casket.

BC RCMP Commanding Officer Dwayne McDonald said last year that O’Brien was recognized early on for his work in helping rescue several victims from a home invasion — receiving a commendation from the RCMP for bravery, as well as a provincial award.

“He had a great sense of humour. He was well respected by his peers and he was loved in his community,” McDonald said at the time.

O’Brien left behind his wife Nicole and their three children.

Paul Hyland with the New Westminster police says there were many reminders of what a great person and officer O’Brien was.
