Metro Vancouver’s Grouse Grind Trail to close for upgrades

You’re running out of time if you want to run the Grouse Grind this season.

The Metro Vancouver Regional District says the notoriously challenging trail will be fully closed for maintenance and upgrades starting next week.

Starting Monday, Oct. 7, the district says crews will be working on multiple sections of the trail to repair and replace steps, stairs, and retaining walls to increase its resilience.

Because detours will not be possible during the work, Metro Vancouver says, “visitors are urged to stay off the trail while it’s closed. Ignoring the closure may result in serious injury and delay reopening.”

The BCMC Route and the Baden-Powell Trail will be open during the work period. Metro Vancouver says the BCMC is similar to the Grouse Grind in length and elevation, but it’s even more rugged.

“For anyone choosing to hike the BCMC Route, it’s strongly recommended they wear hiking shoes with good ankle support, carry lots of water and a snack, and bring an extra layer of clothing for warmth.”

Upgrades completed on the trail in April included a new trailhead entrance, replacement of a footbridge, new seating, a water fountain, stretching bars, and changes that allow better access for first responders.

The latest works are set to be completed by Nov. 4.
