New Vancouver star shines after Michelin Guide Awards

After the Michelin Guide Awards Thursday night, another Vancouver restaurant has been added to the prestigious list. Joe Sadowski reports from the ceremony.

Vancouver’s culinary scene is arguably one of the tastiest in the country, with nine Michelin-star restaurants. 

But after the Michelin Guide Awards Thursday night, another Vancouver restaurant has been added to the prestigious list.

The award ceremony was held at the Commodore Ballroom in downtown Vancouver, where guests got to wine and dine with delicious food from the most decorated establishments across the city.

The main course: a 10th Michelin-starred restaurant in Vancouver. Sushi Masuda, a five-seat sushi counter on West Hastings Street, between Burrard and Thurlow streets, has only been open for seven months and has now received one of the highest honours a North American restaurant can.

Chef Yoji Masuda, born and raised in B.C., was also named Vancouver’s best young chef at just 33 years old.

While his accomplishment is great, and Masuda was feeling honoured Thursday night, he says there’s little time to celebrate.

“We have to go back to the restaurant to prepare for tomorrow. Today is kind of a day off now, but there’s reservations tomorrow,” Masuda told CityNews Thursday night.

Three other Vancouver restaurants were added to the Michelin Tourism Guide, including the seafood-forward Bravo on Fraser Street and its neighbour directly across the street, the northeastern Thai restaurant Zap Bite.

Gary’s Restaurant, on Granville Street, received a Bib Gourmand award for its budget, friendly menu, and an accolade for best service.

The owner, Bailey Hayward, tells CityNews that Gary’s started from humble beginnings.

“It started from a friends-only supper club in our own house, so I think you could [go] there and expect to feel some version of that, obviously, on a different scale. We really just want to make people good food and make them feel like they’re at home in our space,” said Hayward.

The Michelin Guide also presented awards for exceptional cocktails to Fraser Crawford at Kissa Tanto Restaurant, while the sommelier award for wine service went to Reverie Beall from AnnaLena.
