Vancouver Park Board approves new False Creek park design

Vancouver Park Board commissioners approved designs for the first phase of the East Park project coming to the False Creek Waterfront in Olympic Village. Kate Walker reports.

A new park is coming to the False Creek waterfront in Vancouver’s Olympic Village neighbourhood.

The Vancouver Park Board approved designs for the first phase of the East Park project following two rounds of engagement from community members and guidance from local First Nations.

The concept plan of the park includes shaded seating areas, a large lawn space designed for small-scale community events, a fitness area and a separate walking and cycling path for more access along the water and throughout the park.

“The design incorporates accessible access to lush natural areas, large flexible lawn areas, welcoming social areas and opportunities for cultural expression and representation,” the Park Board’s proposed concept plan included.

Part of the plan also includes opportunities for cultural recognition and Indigenous artwork in the park.

The official name of the park will be announced through a separate naming process.

The construction of the first phase is set to begin on the south side of the project site in late 2026 and is expected to complete by late 2028.

Phase two of the project will include the creation of a green and lush habitat at the shoreline and will follow the completion of ongoing engineering studies.

The park is expected to serve the more than 12,000 residents living within a 10-minute walk and 34,000 residents living within a kilometre.
