Jagmeet Singh throws support behind locked-out B.C. port workers

Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh joined locked-out B.C. port workers Friday in their fight to hammer out a deal with their employer.

This comes a day before both sides are set to return to the bargaining table.

Throwing his support behind more than 700 ILWU Local 514 foremen, who are now into their fifth day of being locked out by their employer, Singh says he’s standing alongside workers on the picket lines to send a clear message.

“Directly to Justin Trudeau and the Liberals: don’t interfere with this process,” he said.

“This is about workers getting their rights. This is about workers getting their fair share.”

Union president Frank Moreno says automation has been the sticking point for foremen for over a year.

“Employers say automation is inevitable,” Moreno said.

“What they’re not saying is they want to get rid of good paying jobs and make more profits. It’s about greed.”

Bargaining is set to resume this weekend, with the help of federal mediators.
