A woman was seriously injured after an interaction with police in Duncan on Vancouver Island Friday, according to the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIOBC).
The RCMP told the police watchdog organization that they were called to the intersection of Underwood and Craig Streets around 2 p.m. after reports of a woman waving a weapon at passing vehicles.
“Officers located the woman near the river off of Allenby Road, and there was an interaction between the woman and police while she was being taken into custody,” the IIO said in a news release.
“The woman sustained a serious injury and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.”
The IIOBC is a civilian agency that investigates all police-involved incidents resulting in death or serious harm, whether or not wrongdoing is alleged.
