Seymour, Grouse, Cypress mountains under ‘extreme’ avalanche warning

Experts are warning of heightened avalanche danger on mountains along the North Shore and B.C.’s south coast during an ongoing rainstorm.

Avalanche Canada says the danger rating for popular ski locations Seymour, Grouse, and Cypress mountains is ‘extreme’ — the organization’s highest rating.

“Travel in avalanche terrain in the alpine and treeline should be avoided during the storm,” said Avalanche Canada.

It also says storm ‘slab size’ and sensitivity to avalanche triggering will likely increase through the day.

“Reactive new storm slabs are expected to build during the storm Wednesday night through Thursday. Older, deeper, storm slabs formed earlier in the week may result in very large avalanches being triggered.”

The warning comes as a forecast of several days of heavy rain and wind hits B.C.’s coasts.
