The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over investigating after firefighters in the city found a body in an abandoned home while they were battling a blaze on Sunday.

In a release Monday, the SPS says officers were called to the house along 138th Street near the Fraser Highway by the Surrey Fire Service just after 4 p.m.

“Surrey Fire Service firefighters located the deceased adult man inside the residence while they controlled the active structure fire. Frontline SPS officers attended and have held the scene while also canvassing the neighbourhood for witnesses and surveillance video,” Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said in a statement.

“At this early stage of the investigation, it is unknown how the man died, and his death is being treated as suspicious until deemed otherwise,” Houghton added.

In an update Monday afternoon, IHIT announced it had “now taken conduct of this investigation.”

Anyone with information, including footage of the fire, is being urged to call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or reach investigators by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
