2 people injured in Mission crash after driver flees from police

A driver in Abbotsford has been arrested after fleeing a traffic stop and shortly after crashing head-on into another car on the Mission Bridge early Friday morning.

The Abbotsford Police Department said that around 12:30 a.m. officers tried to do a traffic stop when the driver of a Ford Mustang “did not comply.”

“Shortly after, the suspect vehicle travelled southbound in the northbound lanes of Highway 11 and collided head-on with a northbound civilian vehicle,” Sgt. Paul Walker shared.

The suspect and the driver of the other vehicle involved were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police say, and the driver was arrested.

The Lower Mainland’s Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service was deployed to the site to help investigators.

Cpl. Dave Noon shared on X that the “serious” crash had closed the northbound lanes of Highway 11 while investigators were on the scene.

Just before 6:30 a.m., DriveBC confirmed the bridge had reopened to traffic.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC confirmed later Friday that AbbyPD officers notified the team of the incident shortly after it happened, and it is now actively investigating.

“Initial investigative steps will confirm if the injuries meet the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, and what connection, if any, police action or inaction may have played in the collision,” the police oversight body shared.

Police are urging anyone with information or dash camera footage to call the AbbyPD at 604-859-5225. Meanwhile, the IIO is also asking for witnesses to come forward and contact the team at 1-855-446-8477.
