Snow in Fraser Valley closes Mission schools, creates slippery highway conditions

Depending on where you live in the Lower Mainland you may or may not be waking up to even more snow on Thursday morning.

South of the Fraser River, from Surrey through to Abbotsford, saw the most snowfall, forcing the closure of one school district.

Public schools in Mission are closed on Thursday, and no in-person classes are taking place.

The snow has also created some very slippery conditions on Highway 1 through the valley, 1130 NewsRadio Traffic Anchor Ryan Lidemark explains.

“Some dicey conditions on the roads south of the Fraser, through areas of Abbotsford and Langley. There’s a spun-out car eastbound on the Number 1, just after 200 Street in the HOV lane,” he explained.

1130 Meteorologist Michael Kuss explains that as the day goes along, the snow will ease up and the sky will start to clear.

“There’s been no precipitation around for a good chunk of Metro Vancouver, especially west and northwest sections,” he said. “But through the evening and overnight, there was snow in other parts of the east and southeast, and then up to the northeast too, and then all the way out into the Valley.

“We’re seeing snow tapering off just this morning in the last hour or so, but two to five centimeters of snow fell in a lot of neighbourhoods in those eastern sections,” Kuss added.

Reporter Mike Lloyd says the snow is creating some very challenging conditions for drivers around Mission and Maple Ridge, too.

“There’s a lot of snow that came down overnight. Plenty of snow-covered roads,” he said. “Certainly some stretches there that are packed down and white. So, it is basically a tale of two commutes this morning, to the west, you’re fine. To the east, much, much worse on the road.”

The region is expecting a high of 1 degree on Thursday, with some frigid temperatures again overnight.
