GoFundMe set up for family of Surrey teen shot, killed by police

A fundraiser has been created to help the family of a teen who was shot and killed by police over the weekend pay for unexpected funeral expenses.

According to the GoFundMe, the boy’s cousin says she’s looking for help from the community in this “extremely rough time.”

“Chase was a son, a grandson, a nephew, a cousin, and a loyal friend. He is missed by so many,” Alexis Butchart shared.

“This travesty has shook our family to the core, any help would be appreciated,” Butchart continued.

On Sunday, police were called to the Clayton Heights neighbourhood after reports of a person with a gun. After what the RCMP calls “an extensive interaction,” they say shots were fired and the person died.

The actions of the police officers are now under investigation by the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO), the province’s police oversight body.

“I’m setting this up for my aunty and uncle to help pay for funeral expenses,” Butchart continued.

“He was on the spectrum and was a very loving and caring boy. He didn’t deserve this. This is a very hard time for our family. Anything helps. Thank you for taking the time.”

On Wednesday, AutismBC called for increased education and training as it says the teen’s death has left the community feeling “fear and worry” about whether police and other officials know how to safely interact with autistic people.

As of Thursday morning, more than $14,000 has been contributed to the fundraiser which has a $26,000 goal.
