Surrey man convicted of manslaughter after 2022 stabbing

A man who was 17 at the time of a deadly 2022 stabbing in Surrey has been found guilty of manslaughter.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) began investigating after a man was stabbed to death in Surrey’s Clayton Heights neighbourhood on the night of Aug. 18, 2022.

The RCMP says officers were first called to the area of 184 Street and Fraser Highway around 10 p.m., where they found the 44-year-old victim with serious injuries. He later died in the hospital.

Police later identified the victim as Leroy Billy.

“On August 18, 2023, a 17-year-old youth from Surrey was charged with one count of manslaughter. The name of the accused was not released as per the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act,” investigators explained.

In an update Thursday, IHIT says the accused was found guilty of manslaughter earlier this month, and will be sentenced in March.

“Mr. Billy’s life was cut short suddenly as a result of the accused’s actions and our thoughts continue to be with his family as the court proceedings come to a conclusion,” said Sgt. Fred Fong.
