Shop around for gas Monday as Lower Mainland prices vary widely

It might pay to shop around if you’re looking to fill up your gas tank on Monday.

The price of a litre of regular gas varies widely across the region, with some stations selling gas for $1.69 with others up toward $1.84.

While what you’re paying at the pump locally has been jumping around as of late, some analysts are predicting a downward trend.

The head of GasBuddy says there could be more downward pressure on gas prices in the weeks ahead as Prime Minister Mark Carney plans to pause the federal carbon tax.

“Average gas prices have inched up in some parts of Canada over the past week, most notably in British Columbia and Alberta, while the Prairies saw slight declines. However, with news that Prime Minister Carney is pausing the carbon tax, there could be some downward pressure on gas prices in the weeks ahead, depending on whether the policy is fully repealed or just temporarily paused,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“Additionally, continued uncertainty over a potential trade battle with the United States may keep gas prices from following their usual seasonal rise, as concerns grow over weakening demand should the dispute escalate,” he said.

Premier David Eby has said B.C. is following suit and will repeal the provincial carbon pricing.

According to GasBuddy.com, the average price of gas rose 5.3 c/L in the past week, averaging 178.44 c/L on Sunday. This compares with the national average that increased 1.1 c/L in the last week to 150.64 c/L.

Meanwhile, prices in Metro Vancouver on Sunday were 17.9 c/L lower than the same day one year ago and are 6.3 c/L lower than a month ago, GasBuddy says.
