Rainfall warning still in place for Lower Mainland after weekend soaking

Despite slightly calmer conditions on Monday morning, a rainfall warning remains in place for much of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

Meteorologist Carl Lam explains that we should see some periods of moderate to heavy rain again after the weekend’s deluge.

“Another 20 to 30 millimetres on top of what has already fallen,” he explained. “And that will bring those rainfall totals closer to about 60, 70, 80 millimetres of rain. And there are those locally higher amounts getting over 100 millimetres.”

Lam describes Sunday rain as a “complete soaker” for much of the region and adds that the atmospheric river won’t really let up until late morning Tuesday.

“Early afternoon is when things will start to dry things out briefly, but there’s another system on the heels of it that will be here Wednesday afternoon,” he explained.

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s rainfall warning also covers the Howe Sound and the Sunshine Coast.

“The highest amounts will be near the coastal mountains. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible,” ECCC said. “If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance.”
