Callers to 1130 NewsRadio first reported the incident between Gaglardi Way and Brunette Avenue around 12:40 p.m., where traffic was blocked for over an hour — intermittently in both directions

The BC Highway Patrol says a driver and suspect vehicle were involved three crashes near Gaglardi Way, Government Street, and Brunette Avenue following a robbery in Burnaby.

The Burnaby RCMP confirms it responded to reports of a robbery at a bank near the corner of Hastings Street and Sperling Avenue Tuesday. Police say no one was injured and the suspect left the scene before officers arrived.

“While Burnaby RCMP officers were in the early stages of their investigation, a driver, believed to be the same suspect from the bank robbery, was then allegedly involved in several crashes which occurred on Highway 1,” said Mounties in a statement to CityNews.

Police say the suspect finally stopped and abandonded their vehicle after the crash on Brunette Avenue and attempted to run across the busy highway.

Callers describe the driver leaving the car in the middle of the road, and running to hide.

1130 News Radio listener PJ says it was clear the vehicle was already on Mounties’ radar because they were on scene almost immediately.

“As we were waiting around, 15 RCMP officers came by and chased after this guy. Two undercover RCMP officers came by and started chasing after this guy. And then there was a RCMP chopper overhead looking for this guy,” PJ claimed.

Visuals from the scene showed police and fire crews surrounding one area of bushes on an embankment near the westbound shoulder of Highway 1.

“Very shortly thereafter they were taken into custody by members of Burnaby RCMP and the Police Dog Service,” said the BCHP in an update before 4 p.m.

Police say any injuries associated with the crashes are reportedly minor in nature.

1130 NewsRadio has reached the BC Highway Patrol, the Burnaby RCMP, BC Emergency Health Services, and the Burnaby Fire Department for more information.

In an update around 2:30 p.m., Drive BC reported that Highway 1 had fully cleared.

Drivers can still expect delays in both directions.
