Surrey Police Department warns against spoofed calls from its non-emergency number

The Surrey Police Department is warning the public that scammers have been spoofing its non-emergency number.

Fraudsters are calling people in an effort to obtain personal information, with the number appearing as 604-599-0502.

“Incoming calls appear to be from SPS’s number,” police said.

“If a person answers, the caller may even fabricate an officer’s name and badge number to attempt to gain trust. These calls are not legitimate.”

The SPS advises the public to never provide personal information over the phone, send money, or respond to any links sent by the caller.

Also, you should end the call as quickly as possible, hang up, and call the non-emergency number to report it.

Similar incidents were reported in West Vancouver and Delta earlier this year. Delta police say the scam has been reported in other cities across Canada and the U.S.
