Surrey hit-and-run kills 6-year-old girl, injures her 2 siblings: police

The SPS says it has arrested the driver alleged to have committed a hit-and-run that killed a six-year-old girl and injured her two other siblings late Sunday afternoon. Monika Gul reports.

The driver who allegedly committed a hit-and-run that killed a six-year-old girl and injured her two other siblings late Sunday afternoon has been arrested.

1130 NewsRadio can confirm the three children struck by a pick-up truck at 164 Street and 108 Avenue were siblings. They were out for a walk with their parents when the crash happened, police say.

The six-year-old girl died in front of her parents as her seven-year-old sister and 16-year-old brother were rushed to hospital where they are expected to recover.

RCMP Surrey Police Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) responded to reports of three pedestrians being struck by a grey pick-up truck at the intersection of 164 Street and 108 Avenue in Surrey’s Fraser Heights neighbourhood just after 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The driver took off but was tracked to the area of 101 Avenue and 160 Street after hitting a parked car. Police say alcohol is believed to be a factor in the tragedy.

Surrey Police Service Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton says the case is hard on the victim’s loved ones, the community, and first responders.

“Police, fire and ambulance, we go to some of the most emotionally charged incidents. These are the worst [cases]. As a parent myself, it hits home. You hear that a six-year-old girl has died, and you can’t help but think of your own children or your nieces and nephews.”

Houghton says it’s unclear if the family was in a crosswalk or on the sidewalk at the time.

“They were at or near the intersection is the best information I have at this point. They were out for a family walk on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.”

He stresses that the investigation will take a while.

“The evidence usually dictates the charges and Crown Counsel — it will be up to them to assess the charge approval and what charges there are. There are a range of charges both in the Criminal Code and in the Motor Vehicle Act ranging from various driving offences, like driving without due care, dangerous driving causing death.

“And in the Criminal Code, if the evidence supports it, there are criminal versions of those, but there’s also impaired driving and other criminal charges. It’s very complicated.”

Houghton says the RCMP’s Criminal Collision Investigation team has CCTV footage and will be combing over the city’s traffic cameras to figure out what exactly happened and whether speed was also a possible factor.

“What the light situation was, stop signs, yielding, right of way, all of those things are different factors that come into play. We also need to take witness statements and speak with witnesses.”

He says it will take a while for the community to recover.

“Our thoughts go out to the family and the Fraser Heights community, and as kids go to school today, little kids in Grade 1 are going to be going to school without one of their classmates.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Surrey Police Service at 604-599-0502.
