Thursday’s Mass at the Holy Rosary Cathedral in downtown Vancouver held an extra special meaning for Catholics, with an announcement of a new Pope.
Cardinal Robert Prevost — who has taken the name Pope Leo XIV — is the first American to hold the title.
“I found my way in and lit a candle for the Pope and for my family — they live in New York — and for Vancouver,” one church visitor told CityNews.
“It wasn’t just myself that was very joyous,” another visitor said.
“Everyone was very glad. It’s kind of like having a new president, but better.”
The white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel’s chimney mere hours before Thursday’s mass, but a photo of the new Pope was ready to welcome people into the cathedral.
Some are shocked by Thursday’s announcement, as there had long been a taboo against a U.S. Pope, with the country already considered to wield a lot of power.
While many wait to learn more about the new leader, there is hope that he will continue Pope Francis’ legacy, which includes a historic apology in 2022 for the Catholic Church’s role in residential schools.
“I think that Indigenous issues, not just in Canada but around the world, are going to continue to be dear to his heart,” said John Martens, professor of Theology at the University of British Columbia.
“I think the process of reconciliation starts with the Papal apology. It doesn’t end there.”
