B.C. to invest $6M more in repeat violent offenders program

Businesses in Surrey continue to face extortion attempts. As Jack Morse reports, public safety officials in B.C. are still trying to get a handle on the situation.

The provincial government is doubling down on funding police programs aimed at stopping repeat violent offenders in B.C.

In March, B.C.’s annual budget earmarked $67 million for community safety programs, including the Repeat Violent Offending Intervention Initiative (ReVOII) and the Special Investigation and Targeted Enforcement Program (SITE).

At a media event Friday, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Garry Begg announced an additional $6 million, for a total of $17 million in funding, to continue SITE.

“Since [launching SITE], law enforcement agencies have consistently praised SITE as a critical tool in combating repeat violence and facilitating effective interventions,” Begg claimed.

He explained that 12 “intervention hubs” have been established across the province under the ReVOII program, monitoring over 400 repeat violent offenders. Begg promised those hubs will continue to operate.

Begg says the province will invest $235 million over the next three years to improve public safety.

Meanwhile, he says an enforcement-heavy approach to crime will be complemented with conversations with the federal government about changes to the prosecution service and judicial system.
