Maple Ridge motel evacuated after reported garbage fire

A suspected garbage fire caused damage to a beer and wine store attached to a motel in Maple Ridge Thursday morning.

Maple Ridge Fire Chief Dave Samson says the initial call before 5 a.m. reported someone having set some garbage on fire near the Haney Hotel on Lougheed Highway near 222 Street.

He says the flames were contained to the outside stairwell of the building.

“Our crews were able to gain entry from the exterior and attack the fire inside that had gotten inside the building,” said Samson.

“There was an addition on the outside of the building that was covering an exterior stairwell. So all the fire was on the inside, but it appears we’ve been able to contain it to that exterior stairwell and minimize the damage to the actual inside of the structure.”

Images from the scene show damage to the store’s exterior and awning.

About 20 people in the hotel were forced outside, but Samson says no one, neither civilian nor firefighter, was injured.

He says the fire department didn’t need to cut off power or gas, and the occupants would be able to return to their units safely.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
